Department of Sociology

The aim of the Department of Sociology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is to educate social scientists with high education and professional prospects. The sociological scientific discipline is cultivated on the basis of a fascinating synthesis of theoretical knowledge and empirical research. Theoretical traditions are articulated with the observation of processes that determine the historical development of societies through the use of methods and techniques of empirical analysis with quantitative and qualitative methods. Through the analysis and synthesis of social phenomena in the economy, politics and culture, the non-self-evident mechanisms of social formation and change of modern societies are highlighted. By cultivating critical thinking, the department aims to address widespread stereotypes and prejudices. Thus, it aspires to contribute to the scientific analysis of social phenomena and, through sociological research, to the design and implementation of social policy. It also combines sociological theory and research with interdisciplinary approaches, that is, with related social sciences, such as social anthropology, economic and political sciences, or social and economic history. Thus, it aims to develop abilities to understand and solve complex educational, administrative and operational problems.
