Department of Communication and Mass Media

The Department of Communication and Mass Media of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, is one of the newest Departments of the oldest and largest University in the country. It began operating in the academic year 1990-1991, aiming to meet the needs of academic teaching and research in the field of communication studies in the country. For the last seventeen years it has been operating and growing and has the pleasure of seeing many of its students excel in their printed matter and electronic media, in research, as well as in other activities of Greek society and culture.

Today, our Department is staffed by more than forty teachers and researchers, who are active in different fields, such as cultural studies, political science and sociology, law, history, psychology, art history, linguistics, modern Greek studies, new technologies and their applications, journalism, advertising, public relations, theory and practice of the Mass Media. We argued that the curriculum of our Department offers through the interdisciplinary enables its students to hone their critical and analytical skills and equips graduates with the fundamental and unchanging requirements of the profession of communication. In other words, the composition of the Department reflects the interdisciplinary contours of the subject of communication.

The Department is affiliated with the network “@thina” of the University, providing the possibility of continuous access to the Internet, both for faculty members and for students, through the Laboratory of New Technologies in Communication, Education and the Media and the Library. The University of Athens, constantly developing the network “@thina”, is connected to the Internet through the Greek National Research and Technology Network (GNRT) with an 18Mbps line.

The Department includes three sectors:

  • Department of Social and Political Analysis of Communication
  • Department of Culture, Environment, Communication Applications and Technology
  • Department of Psychology of Communication, Communication Practices and Design
