The new Department has two directions, the direction Turkish Studies and that of Contemporary Asian Studies. Of these directions, the Turkish Studies direction was the first to begin operating, accepting students, 60 per year, while in the future the Asian Studies direction is also expected to operate, with an initial focus on the Japanese and Chinese worlds.

The operation of a pure Department of Turkish Studies was a permanent request of the University of Athens and the wider academic community. There is no doubt that its establishment, after a rather long gestation, escapes the specific and well-known boundaries of the “typical” Philosophical Schools with the Western European linguistic and literary focus (e.g. English, French, German Language and Literature, etc.) and enters the scientific Field of Regional Studies (Area Studies, Études Regionales, Raum Wissenschaften); the teaching of Turkish language, history and culture at the university level is breaking new ground, as for the first time in the history of Greek higher education a solid university department is being created that focuses exclusively on this specific cognitive and cultural world. The Department of Turkish Studies, supervised by a Temporary General Assembly whose members come (since November 2010) from the faculty members of the Department, aims to bring to the country, beyond amateurism and unscientific popularizations or emotional approaches that are easily understood and — to a certain extent — completely understandable, the scientific study of the language, history and culture of its neighbor in general in its long course, with which Hellenism, in the broadest sense of the term, has “encountered” since very long ago. The Temporary General Assembly of the Department and the University of Athens, by extension, estimate that this study will produce scientists as well as specialist researchers, who, now knowing from within the geographical and geocultural System of the Turkic world as well as the Middle Eastern and the Asian Geographic, Geoeconomic and Geopolitical Supersystem, will offer great services to its essential approach and understanding by the Greek scientific (and not only) public, thus contributing to the correct communication between the two neighboring states at all levels: scientific, cultural, political, social, economic, etc. It is, moreover, universally accepted that the rapprochement of states and peoples can only be achieved if those specific 'capitals' required to make the physiognomy, the particularities and the general cultural level of the 'other' understandable and respected are invested in the field of education.

The Department of Turkish Studies, which has operated for the past six years almost exclusively on the basis of expert scientists, has already started Erasmus programs with Turkish universities, while it recently acquired its first faculty members, with the process of elections of other faculty members as well as new announcements being in full swing. The first graduates of the Department have already been sworn in, which is undoubtedly important. The Department has a broad future; it is more than certain that with its presence it will broaden the scientific horizons of the already existing academic field, suppress frivolities, fantasies or other acrobatics in the field of political theory and thought, overcome dead ends and syndromes and contribute much to the deepening and knowledge, with greater self-confidence, not only of the other side of the Aegean but also of the wider Greater Middle East and Central Asia Suprasystemic Area.

["post-131","departments","type-departments","status-publish","hentry
["GET
